UNM Athletics: Swamped by heat, center has cool future
It was the big sweaty elephant in the room most people tried to ignore. During long stretches of the year, the L.F. Tow Diehm Athletics Complex, fitted with inept swamp coolers, felt like a sauna.
Sharapova, Hingis advance in Australian Open
Top-seeded Maria Sharapova got another taste of the elements, ignoring the sauna-like conditions in Rod Laver Arena to beat Tathiana Garbin in two quick sets. It was slightly cooler for three-time Australian champion Martina Hingis, who needed only 62 minutes to beat Japan's Aiko Nakamura 6-2, 6-1.
